Salsa - Linear Style

Our methodology and styling for linear Salsa in based on New York Salsa. Although we love and prefer dancing "On 2", we find that in the Perth market, if creates too much confusion for new dancers to learn a different rhythm to what the majority of social dancers do. However, the techniques and styling nonetheless heavily influenced by New York Salsa, and when you are ready to move to Mambo Rhythm, the change will be relatively easy.

Level 1 : For absolute beginners. No need to worry if it's your first time. A great introduction to Salsa.

Level 2 : Building on the basics, you'll need to achieve the 6 basic turns of Salsa before progressing to level 3.

Level 3 : Open and anything goes.

A Bit of Salsa History

Salsa is a popular form of social dance that originated in the Caribbean. The movements of salsa have origins in Puerto Rican bomba and plena, Cuban Son, cha-cha-cha, mambo and other dance forms. The dance, along with salsa music originated in the mid-1970s in New York.

It looks like this is a byproduct of the disco craze, which was HUGE in The Big Apple in the late 70‚s and early 80‚s. When salsa started to move into the Manhatten based clubs in the late 80‚s, many ex-Hustle dancers brought their disco moves into their salsa.

The current New York salsa style is called Mambo or Salsa On 2. It‚s a blend of Puerto Rican salsa and Latin Hustle with the break on the second beat of the clave. New Yorkers are quite fanatical about Salsa On 2 – there‚s stacks of internet sites which debate the finer points of ‚Salsa On 1″ and ‚Salsa On 2″.
